New Gadgets

Many of us will be looking for new gadgets and software during the upcoming season. There are a few simple concepts that you should remember before rushing out to gather these new items.

First, separate your wants from your needs. Quite often, we don't know what we would do with a new item, however we want it. Be choosy and buy with care. Computer components are not meant to be collectible items.

As a rule, give a new item a year to feel it's way around the marketplace. DVD (digital videodisk) drives have changed drastically since they were introduced; CD Rewriters are standard on new computers. Let new items evolve. Catch up on technology after it's been around and proven. In essence, don't buy it just to keep up with the Jones.

Next, be prepared for the worst when installing something new. Sometimes when we add new components to our computers, everything goes wrong. Tech support staffs are not always able to help with problems in compatibility and bugs. Be ready to do some research, some reading and some repairs.

Keep things simple and don't forget the basics:

  • Read the instructions.
  • Check for compatibility. Just because you buy a new component does not mean it will fit in your machine. Before you buy a new scanner or a second printer, you will need to ensure that you have port (empty slot in the back)) open on your machine
  • Read the instructions…carefully.
  • Be aware that not all software can go on the same machines. Some programs interfere with others. Flight simulators, anti-virus programs and others do not like to be loaded with their competitors. Only load one new item on a computer at a time. Make sure it works and that your machine functions correctly before adding an additional item.
  • Be gentle. Handle all CD's and diskettes with care. New equipment has been known to ship with faulty disks and they damage easily. CD's should only be touched by the edges. They can easily become scratched or dirty. Likewise, do not touch the metal portion of your diskettes. Be careful when writing on them, use a soft-tipped marker.
  • Read the instructions again.

Finally, ask yourself if you can handle your new gadget. After all, would you know what to do with your new DVD?
