Hardware Issues

What is the DVD-ROM drive for?
DVD-ROM technology is currently in the process of replacing CD-ROM technology, but it has a long way to go before it becomes the norm. Our computers come equipped with DVD, but few applications are available on DVD-ROM. The main usage for DVD to date is movies and videos. If you plan on partaking in either, get a DVD, if not, you'll probably not miss it.

Do I need to network?
If you have a family, it's very likely that one day soon your home will have a computer network consisting of PCs, printers, scanners, etc. You should consider connecting your computers together (networking) not only to share equipment, but most notably to share an Internet connection. It also allows you to share each other files. Additionally, security can be enabled to select which files are shared.

How much memory should I have?
64mb of RAM will run Windows just fine. If you want speed … get more! Less than 64mb will result in a slow-pace, but remember that you don't miss what you don't have. If you see "Illegal Operation" messages or or seem to be waiting forever it could be related to RAM. If you use any graphic programs, Microsoft Office, games or a host of other applications, consider 128mb or even 256mb of RAM. Memory is at an all time low cost right now, I just picked up 128mb of Ram for $35!

Should I buy a notebook or handheld computer?
If you only use your PC while sitting at your desk, you shouldn't get a notebook or handheld computer. If you want to be able to use your computer, regardless of where you are, a portable computer might be for you. A handheld computer or Personal Digial Assistant (PDA) is more appropriate for users who want to access information while traveling. They're designed primarily for information retrieval, not information input.

What is a flat LCD monitor?
Liquid-crystal display (LCD) monitors use less energy and generate less heat than the traditional cathode-ray tube (CRT) monitor. They're also much slimmer, at an average of 4 to 6 inches thick; they take up very little desk space. LCD monitors also provide better image quality but, are substantially more expensive. You can get a 15-inch CRT monitor for as little as $120; an LCD monitor of the same size could cost ten time more.

Is digital photography cheaper than film photography?
Digital photography certainly saves you money on film and development, but it carries a steep initial cost. You'll need to purchase a digital camera and a photo-quality printer. Nevertheless you do get to see your results immediately and you don't have to use up the entire roll of film to see how each photo turned out. Even better, the more photos you take, the lower the per-photo cost.

Should I buy an all-in-one device or each unit separately?
An all-in-one device is a scanner, copier, printer, and a fax machine rolled into one. All of their components are interconnected. This makes them inexpensive, but it also means if one breaks, they all break. If you only need one or two of the functions, and have space, purchase each individually.
